You can only apply to the Cinema major during the University’s regular admissions period, October 1st to November 30th.
The Cinema Department requires all its majors to complete two introductory or “Gateway” courses, CINE 200 and CINE 202, prior to taking most other courses in the department. As a declared Cinema major, you will be prioritized for registration in these classes. Please be sure to register for them, even if you plan to take the proficiency exam for exempting these courses (see below).
The Cinema Department only allows transfer credit for courses similar to CINE 200 and CINE 202 in cases where an official articulation agreement exists. To determine if your school has an articulation agreement with SFSU, go to Assist.
A grade of C or higher is required in CINE 200 and CINE 202; a lower grade requires retaking the course(s) or passing the Exemption Exam(s).
You will be designated a pre-Cinema major until CINE 200 and 202 have been successfully completed. Upon completion of these courses and your GE Segment I & II requirements, pre-Cinema majors will automatically become Cinema majors.
Proficiency (Exemption) Exams: You may also attempt to "test out" of CINE 200 and/or CINE 202 by taking an exemption exam for each course; these exams are generally given on Tuesday of the first few weeks of each Fall & Spring semester. Exams are based on recent sections of the courses.
