Teaching experience is strongly encouraged. All MA and MFA students must complete 852, a course that grants credit for serving as a teaching assistant and working with a professor in one the Department’s courses. This much experience is a minimum requirement for the degree. Additional TA work is available by contacting individual faculty with whom you would like to TA. There are also some GA (Graduate Assistant) positions which pay a modest stipend for being the head Teaching Assistant in large lecture classes. Grads are also hired to teach sections of 340, our Critical Studies course where students explore critical methodologies and write essays on selected films. Some grads are hired to teach 325 courses, one unit courses offered over a weekend and some teach via the Continuing Education program that offers many of the same courses as the Department but on a pay-as-you-go basis for adults. Some summer teaching is also available. These options can be discussed further with the Graduate Coordinator after arrival.
How much teaching experience can I obtain?
