SFSU is part of the California State University system. Its emphasis and priority is on undergraduate teaching. Therefore there are very limited resources to support graduate programs in terms of fellowships, post-doctorates, research, travel stipends, and so on. These are normally available, to a greater degree, in doctoral programs. The Department operates its own Cinema Study Center where films, videos, laser discs and CD-ROMs owned by the department may be viewed. The SFSU Library has an excellent collection of films and videos. It is a working print collection which is quite extensive and helpful. SFSU has collected books and films since the 1950s and therefore has a very solid base of material. The Department also has a complete range of filmmaking equipment which, although not directly available to the MA program, offers possibilities for collaborative work with undergraduate and graduate production students.
